You can come to our practice to have a coil fitted, even if you are not (yet) a client of ours. So you do not need to see your family doctor first. You do need to be quite certain that you are not pregnant.
Before the coil is fitted, you will be told exactly how it is done. You can read about it at www.spiraalplaatsen.nl. Afterwards you will be told what to watch out for. Six weeks later we will ask you to come back to the practice for a check-up.
New clients
If you are not (yet) known at this practice, you will first be invited to come to the surgery. We will go through your medical history so that we can give you advice that fits your situation, and we will look at which coil suits you best.
Costs
You order the coil from the pharmacy yourself. The midwife will give you a prescription for it.
Prescribing contraception falls under midwifery care. The costs are covered by health insurance:
- women under 18 have the costs reimbursed from the basic package with no excess to pay;
- women aged 18 to 21 also have the costs reimbursed from the basic insurance, but an excess does apply;
- women of 21 and over are not reimbursed from the basic package, but can take out supplementary insurance for it.
For some contraceptives, and some brands, a personal contribution is asked. That applies to all women, whatever their age. These costs can be covered by supplementary insurance too.

The cost of the coil and of fitting it is not always covered in full by health insurance. It is therefore wise to check with your health insurer beforehand how you are insured and what is reimbursed.
