Registering the birth

Where to register the birth and within what period.

Registering the birth

The birth must be registered with the municipality where the child was born, within three working days of the birth. Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays do not count.

The birth is usually registered by the father, but someone else may do it — provided that person was present at the birth.

Whoever registers the baby must bring valid photo identification (passport or ID card) and, if applicable, the marriage booklet or the certificate acknowledging paternity before the birth.

Registering online from ZGT Almelo

Please note: since 1 January 2020 it has temporarily not been possible to register a birth online from ZGT in Almelo. For the time being, births can only be registered at the town hall, for which you need to make an appointment.

If your baby was born at ZGT hospital in Almelo, the birth can nowadays also be registered online. The hospital has a special iPad for this, provided by the municipality of Almelo.

To register you need the DigiD of both parents and, if the parents are not married, the date and number of the acknowledgement-of-paternity certificate.
