Week 4

Week 4: how your baby develops this week and what you notice.

Your baby

The tiny speck inside you is now growing at great speed and has multiplied into several thousand cells. Those cells have already divided the work neatly among themselves. One group will form the baby — this is called the embryonic knot — another forms the placenta that will feed your child for nine months, and a third forms the membranes.

The neck of the womb is now sealed by a plug of mucus. The muscles of the cervix become more supple. And beneath the lining, blood vessels start rising to the surface so that nutrients can reach the embryo more easily. In short, your body is working hard to turn your womb into a safe nest where your baby can develop over the next eight months.

You

At the end of this week you may lose a little blood. This can be an implantation bleed: the fertilised egg has arrived in the womb and is settling into the wall, which can come with a small amount of bleeding. So it is really the exact opposite of a period.

Pregnancy test

There is only one way to find out whether you really are pregnant: do a pregnancy test. Then again, perhaps you need no test at all to know. Your breasts feel tight, you feel very strange and very tired. On the other hand, those are also the signs of an ordinary period on its way. Confusing. Best do that test.
